Sunday's Gospel Reflection
Humanly speaking, every departure leaves a heart aching with absence. Farewells often carry the weight of distance and the sorrow of letting go. The Ascension of Christ is a farewell but that tells a different story. The Ascension is not the fading of His presence, but its unfolding. It is not the closing chapter of Christ’s work, but the dawn of the Church’s mission.
The Ascension, therefore, is not about absence, but about a deeper presence — Christ alive in His Word, in the Eucharist, in the Holy Spirit, and in the faithful who continue His mission. Christ entrusts His Gospel to fragile human hands, so that His love may continue to touch the world through us. The disciples who watched Jesus ascend were first tempted to stand still and gaze toward heaven. But heaven gently turned their eyes back toward the world — toward wounded humanity, waiting hearts, and unfinished mission. The message of the Ascension is not “stand looking upward”; it is “go forth.” Faith does not remove us from the world; it sends us more deeply into it with renewed purpose. As we celebrate this feast, may we renew our commitment to live not as distant admirers of Jesus, but as courageous disciples entrusted with bringing His light to the world. The Ascension, therefore, is not an ending wrapped in sorrow, but a beginning clothed in promise: “I am with you always, until the end of the age.” In Christ, |
